You're looking at a nearly 3 year old Maine Coon, living in the midwestern USA. Zeke is a bit on the large size, at 27 lbs. When his human companion stretches him out, he measures 36" long. He stands at an impressive 16" high at the shoulders. His wingspan is 24". By comparison, our 18 lb Misty can maybe reach out for a 10" wide hug. Zeke lives with a couple of human companions & two dogs. He gets on well with the dogs, but is was felt that he should have his own getaway where he can at least be in a position to reach out from a relaxed position and smack a nose if the spirit moves him. And if he can gaze out at the aquarium in between naps, so much the better! His human companion got in touch with us to ask if we could build something a bit fuller than our very popular design called "The Square Loft". She said that Zeke would never fit in a bed that was about 14.5" square in the inside. So, we embarked upon a quest to get Zeke a proper Square Loft - or rather Rectangular Loft...   ...The first try was not going to work for Zeke, even though we enlarged the bed to 20". We also compressed the other dimension to 12". This was my mistake, and my lack of imagination. I just couldn't imagine a cat who wouldn't fit in this bed, since our 18 lb. Misty really seemed to get lost in it. What we had ended up was a larger bed overall than the Square loft. The difference of 40 squre inches was just not going to cut it for Zeke. So, we called this design back to the shop & went back to the drawing board. But we were pleased enough with this first try, that we'll offer this one as an alternative to the original design. That somewhat scaled down version is The Medium Zeke. (click to see that). What we ended up with was a really very attractive and useful new piece of cat furniture.
